Matador Cattle Company
Matador Cattle Company operates three ranches that were acquired between 1941 and 1952 by Fred C. Koch, and the Matador Cattle Company was formed in 1952.
Today, the ranches total more than 460,000 acres and support more than 12,000 head of cattle and the ranching families who also call them home.
Beaverhead Ranch is located near Yellowstone National Park in the Rocky Mountains of Montana, Spring Creek Ranch lies among the rolling plains of the scenic Flint Hills in southeast Kansas, and the historic Matador Ranch in West Texas stretches from the Rolling Plains to the Caprock (or High Plains).
As a cattle producer, Matador Cattle Company is committed to raising safe, healthy and wholesome beef that meets the consumers’ expectations. To achieve this, we strive to use the best management practices developed by the Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Program. For example, a valid veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR) is in place at each ranch to ensure health and treatment protocols meet the needs of the cattle at that location.
We also strive to follow other key components of the BQA program, including:
- Low-stress cattle handling
- Written protocols for proper care, treatment, and well-being of cattle
- Good recordkeeping
- Understanding and mitigating biosecurity risks
- Ensuring safety for both the livestock and ranch employees
- Protecting the environment
Full-time employees of the Matador Cattle Company are BQA-certified and part-time employees receive training prior to the seasonal work. To learn more about the BQA Program, visit www.bqa.org or read about us here.
